3 Feminist Misconceptions

Written by Crystal Caldera

Ugly, man-hating, and useless are just a few of the words that have been thrown around to describe Feminists. The truth is, feminism goes beyond looks and common misconceptions. Feminism plays a key role in changing lives and bringing to light  serious issues that are being ignored. But how do misconceptions affect feminists?

Here are 3 very common misconceptions

Misconception : Feminism is fought only for ourselves and our own country.

Pssst. Does someone want to let them know that feminism is a global fight and that we focus on issues affecting everyone? This gives people the idea that feminism is not needed. If people in other countries are threatened, beaten, and killed who is their voice? We are.

Misconception : Feminists are ugly.

From Beyonce to Matt McGorry to me. Do you want to know a little secret? Our looks have nothing to do to what we contribute to the movement. But for the record…don’t let these trolls fool ya’ we are pretty good lookin’.

Misconception: Feminists hate men and only women can be feminist.

People often confuse misandrists and feminists. Feminists do not hate men and no, its not “our thing”. People often disregard the fact that men are and can be feminist too. This misconception in particular is the reason why people (especially men) are scared to support feminism.

So who are feminists and what does “feminism” really stand for?

Feminists are people who believe that men and women should be equal— while fighting for issues that vary from women in politics to helping male and female rape victimshaving the right to go to school, in the simplest of terms. Support your feminists and remember to research.
