As a rapper, what makes Drake so lovable? Is it his black, Jewish, and Canadian background? His hooks on Lil’ Wayne’s songs? Maybe it’s his “shipping” with Nicki Minaj by fans, or his impressive rhymes and accelerated rhythms. To add to the list of things which create a difference within the Star 67 singer, his own lipstick, will be released soon. And all of us Hotline Bling fans can thank Tom Ford! As part of the second ‘Lips & Boys’ collection by Tom Ford, Drake is getting his very own lipstick.

Why is this significant in today’s society? As we elevate our minds into higher and more open thinking – the answer becomes simple. Gender roles. To most, gender roles are complex and intangible. Lipstick, as we all know, was “made for women”. This is within the concept of gender roles.

It has been said for the longest time that men and women must dress differently. But why can  women wear pants; and why do men have to wear pants? It’s because of gender roles! So when men wear lipstick, they are often stigmatized because lipstick has been marketed to women for years!

In a Yahoo article, “The Stigma of Men’s Makeup”, Noël Duan writes, “While many women love to experiment with bright lips and bold eye makeup, men who wear makeup often don’t want anyone else to know about it”. It is important that we work to cease these ideas which have been inserted into the mind since the beginning.

The reason that this ties in with the hot celebrity’s new lipstick line is because of the way the world is viewing everything. Lipstick being named after Drake, a “masculine” rapper, will hopefully give men across this nation and especially around the world, more courage. Its Drake that is constantly taking risks and breaking boundaries. This is what has made him so successful.

But even farther than that, it’s his courage that takes him higher. And that is what we all should be doing; but to the men who read this, find your courage. Being stigmatized has been inevitable for so long. We must eliminate that by bringing awareness to it.

So let’s all wait in those long, cold lines outside of your local makeup retailer on Black Friday and get the new Drake inspired Tom Ford brand lipstick!
