Wendy Williams’ Victim Blaming Statement

Celebrities over the past week such as Zedd, Demi Lovato, Lorde, Lady Gaga, and more have been showing pop star Kesha tremendous amounts of support after she requested to break the contract between herself and her former producer Dr. Luke for verbally, mentally, and sexually abusing her. The luminary appeared in court to break free of this contract with him so she could make music elsewhere and have this emotional weight lifted off of her shoulders. The defamation lawsuit was denied, as the Judge claimed that she could not terminate the contract because without it, Kesha’s career would be “over.” It was clear that Dr. Luke had everyone on his side, and Kesha was left with her mother, the support of fans, and injustice.

This story has appeared in every magazine and news channel, and the majority of people agree that Kesha doesn’t deserve to work with her abuser. It looked like the world could finally agree on one thing, until talk show host Wendy Williams opened her mouth.  In her most recent episode when asked about the topic, Williams said the she believed the Judge’s ruling. “Unfortunately business is business, and it sounds like it’s fair. If everybody complained because somebody allegedly sexually abused them, contracts would be broken all the time. Kesha’s no spring chicken. I mean she’s, like, 30 years old… so she wasn’t stupid 10 years ago and neither was her mother when the sexual abuse — alleged sexual abuse —started. Why weren’t they rolling camera on it?” Let’s get this straight, if you’re sexually assaulted, you shouldn’t say anything because “business is business?” Sexual assault or abuse is not normal. If someone were to be abused in EVERY contract, EVERY contract should be canceled then.

People like Williams are the reason why it is so hard for victims to speak up, and why Kesha didn’t do it ten years ago. She also had the audacity to BLAME Kesha for not recording it! I think it would be a little difficult to record abuse when drugged to the point of unconsciousness. Dr. Luke even posted a photo to Twitter of Kesha passed out, and recently deleted it. Even during the incidents when she was fully lucid, a person shouldn’t need physical evidence. If any man or woman says that they have been abused, you ask that person if they’re okay and take them as far away from that situation as you possibly can. This isn’t the first controversial opinion that Williams had said on her show. The TV host has a history of body shaming stars like Ariana Grande and using transphobic language whist talking about Caitlyn Jenner. Her bullying and offensive comments wouldn’t matter if she didn’t have such a large audience. Her impact is strong and she is using it hurt people. Her words are dangerous to rape victims, the transgender community, and any woman who may be undeveloped. If she needs to be cruel in order to appear funny, she is no comedian.
