Contraception 101

Written by Hetty Jee

You want to knowlearn about contraception?? well you’ve come to right place because we all know sex ed isn’t great.

Condoms : there are two types, ‘male’ ones, which covers the whole penis to stop sperm traveling into the unwanted area. Kinda like when your dying your hair, you put bag over it to stop the dye going everywhere. Condom also prevent STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) if they cover the infected area.

“female” condoms also so do the same job but look kinda like monsters from the alien films, So “how does this ugly alien fit in size me”?  well thanks to the NHS(National health service, in the uk ) heres a step by step guide:

How to use a female condom

  • Take the female condom out of the packet, taking care not to tear the condom – do not open the packet with your teeth.
  • Squeeze the smaller ring at the closed end of the condom and insert it into the vagina.
  • Make sure that the large ring at the open end of the female condom covers the area around the vaginal opening.
  • Make sure the penis enters into the female condom, not between the condom and the side of the vagina.
  • Remove the female condom immediately after sex by gently pulling it out – you can twist the large ring to prevent semen leaking out.
  • Throw the condom away in a bin, not down the toilet.

Sadly ‘female’ condoms aren’t readily available like ‘males’ ones

The rest of these are for ‘females’

The pill : You take this magical thing everydayfor 21 days, ( can vary depending on the type of pill you are prescribed ) then take break for 7 day which means you get your period back for bit, then back on pill after a week. The pill It tricks your body into thinking that you are pregnant which stops you producing eggs ( stops progesterone and estrogen, if you want to get science-y ). The pill DOESN’Tprevent STD’s so beware.

Of course with all medications there are side effects and risks so speaking to your doctor would be advised.

The implant : this is basically 40mm tube that goes under skin in the upper part of the arm, the implant can last up to 3 years before being replaced, progestogen is continuously released into the body, which also tricks the body into thinking you’re pregnant.

Once implanted it get be removed easily by doctor or nurse. All the they do is cover the skin with anaesthetic, make a small cut and remove the implant then your off your merry way, no stitches needed.

The injections: this is very similar with the implant which tricks the body into thinking you’re pregnant ( ect ect ) but only lasts for 12 – 14 weeks, this is also for useful for women who can’t have contraception that contains oestrogen.

IUD ( intrauterine device ) & IUS ( intrauterine system) this is t-shaped object ( why did i use the work object???) that is inserted into your uterus by trained doctor/nurse, and you guess it, it tricks the body into think you’re up the duff by releasingprogestogen. it takes about 20 minutes to insert IUS, how the hell do they put it in ?? you shout, well the vagina is held open like your having smear test, then the IUS is inserted through cervix into the womb. But once fitted it can last up to 5 years ( damn) so you don’t have to worry forgetting to take a pill.

Any of these procedure in the uk is free thanks to the NHS which means you can find contraception at most GPs surgeries, community clinics, sexual health clinics and some young people services.

In the united states conception has range of pricesdepending on your health insurance coverage. According to planned parenthood, the pill can cost up between $15 to $50 a month (£10 to £35 ), implant can costbetween $0 and $800 up front for insertion and removal cost $0 and $300 but. The injection or shot has it commonly know over seas. Can cost $0–$100 per injection, plus any exam fees. IUD is probably the most expensive oneif your health insurance doesn’t cover it, as it can cost between C$0 and $1,000. if you ever unsure you can book appointment with planned parenthood (link at the end)

Remember it’s okay to talk about sex and wanting conception, you shouldn’t feel ashamed, sex is normal and natural, remember to stay curious.
