Cut Out The Double Standards: Nick Young and Kehlani

This week has been quite an eventful week in terms of celebrity news. On Monday, a photo of Kehlani and PartNextDoor surfaced. This photo caused a frenzy on the internet. Kehlani received a lot of backlash because she has been dating basketball player Kyrie Iriving for some time now, although Kyrie has now confirmed they have been broken up for a while. Many people jumped to conclusions calling Kehlani a hoe, a dog, a whore and many other unwarranted names. Nobody knew the truth, but this sparked a debate. Many men felt that woman aren’t called out enough when they are unfaithful. That’s a valid argument, but the problem was many didn’t know the truth on whether or not Kehlani and Kyrie broke up, the insults were unwarranted and exposed many of the insecurities men have towards women. Cheating is wrong whether you’re a man or a woman, but when it came to Nick Young, the internet changed its tune.

Recently a video surfaced of basketball player Nick Young confessing on tape that he cheated on pop star Iggy Azalea with a 19 year old; the video was taped by his teammate D’angelo Russell. Once this video leaked, many people were actually mad at D’angelo for recording it, who knows if he released it. How come people weren’t outraged at Nick Young for cheating on his fiance? How come we are quick to cape for male cheaters, but crucify woman even when they didn’t even cheat? Nick is actually getting more support rather than hate, in Kehlani’s case she was receiving so much hate that she later attempted suicide. Personally, I’m sick of the double standard, how come men are allowed to cheat and not get crucified for it? But when a woman supposedly cheats, she gets called every derogatory name? It’s all twisted, many teammates are shouting out D’angelo, but what he did was not wrong at all.

I believe men and women should be held accountable at the same level, Nick Young should be called out for his behavior, instead he is receiving praise from the same men who called Kehlani a hoe, and many other names. We have people on Twitter calling D’angelo a snitch, morally cheating on someone is wrong, you don’t put the other person’s feelings into consideration, so why are we trying to protect Nick Young? Kehlani didn’t get the same protection, she had to endure the hate she received all day through social media, and the ironic part is she didn’t do anything wrong. Cut out the double standards; if you are going to crucify Kehlani, I advise you do the same for Nick Young, the difference here is we have proof that he actually did cheat. We all need to be held accountable for the things we do and shouldn’t get a free pass based on gender. So cut out the double standards.
