Girl Power! 5 Hip Hop Artists You Should Know

Tink-Million-Video

As a serious hip hop/rap stan a lot of the times I find it hard to really get into the music because of the lyrics. From Kanye’s constant misogyny threaded through his new album to J. Cole’s subtle homophobia, I’ve been looking for new artists to listen to for when I just can’t stand all the messiness. So in my search I came across some really cool (and really talented) artists that everybody should know!

1. Jean Grae- Jean has been around for a while but she’s kept underground for most of it. If you don’t know of her, you probably should. She’s gritty and her vocabulary is out of this world. She’s another socially conscious lyricist with something to say– and you’ll want to be ready when she says it.

2. Tink- The 21 year old female rapper hails from Chicago and has a sound that’s best described as soulful and contemporary. She reminds many of a Lauryn Hill type with her socially conscious lyrics and voice that flows with the beat like water. Songs like “Tell The Children” shows she’s down for talking about important issues.

3. Nyemiah Supreme- When it comes to lyrics Nyemiah is in fact, supreme. The rapper comes from Queens and like Tink, she has the Timberland stamp of approval. Her music is dripping with the same Girl Power vibes that artists like Eve and Nicki Minaj also have. She’s contemporary, cool, and outspoken. Everything we want in a hip hop artists.

4. Jungle Pussy- Badass. That’s the word you’d use to sum up Jungle Pussy. With lyrics full of sexual liberation, knowledge on the female anatomy, and plenty of Girl Power vibes; Jungle Pussy is a mix of Lil’ Kim and TLC. She’s loud and provocative which, in this day and age is bound to take the hip hop world by storm.

5. Angel Haze- Angel Haze is not-so-much underground anymore but they are an important part of this list. Angel announced on Twitter that they are agender. The 23 year old’s EP Reservation was dropped for free online in 2012, officially putting them on the map as a hip hop artist. They’ve talked about their rape in Cleaning Out my Closet, and in the album Back to The Woods they kept it up with their truth telling and explorative lyrics. Not only is their music worth the listen but they’re also worth supporting for other reasons.

These artists have gotten me through after listening to Kanye flaunt his wife’s sex tape and Kendrick Lamar’s confusing depiction of the black community. They’re music is empowering, it’s hard, and it’s about something. They make up everything that hip hop is supposed to be.
