I’m sure you’ve heard at least once in your life that women make less money than men, but a large majority of the population ignore this. April 12th was Equal Pay Day. According to CNN in 1964 women on average were paid 59% of what men made, in 2014 that number was raised to 79%.

The pay gap between women and men is still a huge issue today, what’s even more of an issue is the pay gap between people of color and white people. Shocked? I would be too. In the 1970’s black women made about 48% of what a white man made, and in 2013 that number only rose to 64%.

On Tuesday Obama issued a proclamation on Equal Pay Day, that women deserve to be paid the same as their male counterparts were last year.

“Equal pay for equal work should be a fundamental principle of our economy,” President Barack Obama said Tuesday in a speech commemorating Equal Pay Day. “It’s the idea that whether you’re a high school teacher, a business executive, or a professional soccer player or tennis player, your work should be equally valued and rewarded, whether you are a man or a woman.” – President Obama

You’re probably thinking this is great, but again race comes into play. To be blunt, this only applies to white women and white men. A working white woman will make the same amount of money as a working white man.

According to the National Women’s Law Center due to the current age gap White women lose over $400,000 every year that they could be earning, for Black women it’s over $800,000, for Hispanic women it’s more than $1 million and for Asian women it’s over $700,000.

Major companies and corporations have recently been put on the spot about the Gender wage gap topic, specifically Microsoft and Facebook. On average women involved in Tech make about 3% less money than men if not more. You’re probably thinking that these women aren’t doing as rigorous jobs as the men in Tech like most people assume, but these women are doing the exact same jobs and even more involved in some cases.

These corporations giving equal pay to women might come around easy, but what about the amount of women they actually have working for their Tech departments? in 2015 Microsoft released data information that showed about 83% of their Tech force are men, while a little over 15% are women.

Despite Obama making an effort to get equal pay – The congress and house aren’t very on board with how “far” he’s taken this matter.

According to the Institute of Women’s Policy, women aren’t set to earn equal pay until 2059. Your race and working class play a huge roll in this estimate as well.
