It’s prom season and many black girls are heading to the beauty shop to get their hair done, edges laid, and for some of us we’re getting our inches sewn in. Now, before I start going in with the article let me clarify: THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH DOING ANY OF THESE THINGS!!! Get your hair done boo, swing that sew in girl! Whatever your process is to slay your prom night, go for it.

However, I would like to encourage all of y’all to rock your natural hair for prom. Many girls are scared to wear their curls out because it isn’t the normal hairdo for prom but here are a few facts for you:

1. Your natural hair (not straightened) is perfectly capable of being styled into a beautiful updo!

2. It takes a crazy long time to do our hair; weave, wigs, and a flat iron style can take forever! It’s kind of gratifying to skip the long salon appointment and have your beautician give you a cute natural style instead! It saves you sleep and time to get the rest of your prom look ready! 3. Everybody will be looking at your gorgeous hair when you walk in looking like a baddie! Think about it: dress, hair, face beat— what they know about that?

4. It’s an easy way to embrace your natural hair as well as do something a little different than other people who will be there! Finding a unique prom dress can be hard and finding a unique hairstyle can be even harder, unless of course your hiding a beautiful head of curls!

Of course, whatever you all decide to do you’re gonna slay. But many of us could use the extra boost in learning to love our hair! There’s nothing wrong with wearing a wig or sew in that’s silky and smooth— but there’s nothing wrong with letting you curls out either! Be safe and be beautiful, black girls!
