No woman is looking for a disrespectful guy, but when you’re in love or infatuated with someone, those feelings can cloud your judgment. Women often overlook the sexist things their significant other does because they really want the relationship to work. Do your boyfriend’s actions make you question his thoughts on your gender? Here are five signs that you’re dating a misogynist.

#1 – He Tries to Police What You Wear

If you’re boyfriend ever says, “Where are you going dressed like that?” or “Maybe you should change, I don’t want guys checking you out,” You should question him. A lot of girls look at this as cute and romantic, because it means that they “care.” A little amount of jealously is healthy, but not trusting you to go out in public wearing whatever you please is not a good sign. It means that he believes he has some ownership of you.

#2 – He Slut Shames Other Girls

This sign is disregarded a lot, as how he responds and treats other women shows who he really is. Even if doesn’t slut shame you, what do you think he’ll say behind your back if he’s angry with you, or if you’re taking a break? Besides, the amount of people a woman sleeps with isn’t any of his business, nor does he have the right to comment on it.

#3 – He Asks You If You’re On Your Period

Of course it’s okay if he sees a tampon or pad wrapper laying around, or sees a blood stain on your pants and asks, but in the midst of an argument or discussion and you become emotional and he says, “Are you on the rag?” That’s just not right. By doing this, he is invalidating your feelings and is trying to embarrass you. He may say that it’s a genuine question, but it’s downright rude. It’s blaming your sadness or anger on the fact that you’re a woman. If that doesn’t scream misogynistic, I don’t know what does.

#4 – “Guys Hate When Girls Wear a Lot of Makeup”

This statement is implying that girls wear makeup for men, which just isn’t true. I wrote an entire article on this issue here. The best thing about this is that almost all men aren’t really aware of what a lot of makeup is in the first place. Women go through pounds of makeup to achieve the “natural look” that guys seem to like. Besides, Kim Kardashian is known for wearing a lot of makeup, but she’s also the go-to celebrity crush for men. But when women don’t wear makeup, they are perceived as “tired-looking” and “unprofessional.” Can we ever win?

#5 – He Treats You as a Possession, Not a Person

Has your boyfriend ever referred to you as his “thing?” Have you ever felt like a shiny new toy hanging on his arm, as he boasts to his friends? Do you feel like you’ve lost yourself, and now you exist to feed his ego and desires? If that’s the case, your mate does not respect you, or treat you the way that you should be treated. Your thoughts, wants, dreams, and emotions matter, and don’t let him feel like they don’t!
