This year, the Kardashian family chose to make their annual vacation destination the beautiful island of Cuba.

As their trip came to a close, Kim tweeted

To her, this may be a cute and artsy vibe, but those who reside in Cuba do not see it that way. The average person in Cuba lives off $6,000 a year. Kim thinks it’s beautiful that Cuba is frozen in time, but it’s not a choice. The government sanctions a lot of imports, very little new things make it to Cuba. They’re trapped in the 1950’s.

Many people don’t understand the embargo act, and I’m sure the Kardashians are among them.In 1961, President Kennedy officially cut any ties the United States had with Cuba. This meant that no Americans were allowed to spend money in Cuba. This hurt the countries economy tremendously, as they relied on American made products.

Since the dictator Fidel Castro came into power, Cuba went from a beautiful, amazing country to a nightmare. The paradise went bad extremely quick.

Slowly, Cuba started changing completely. The place that was once known as paradise turned into hell. People wanted to escape, they were willing to do anything and everything to leave their once precious home. Cubans are limited in the type of foods they can buy, many times they have to buy foods in the black market. Additionally, there are two currencies in Cuba, this creates a disadvantage for Cubans because they are barred from shops made for tourist with the tourist speciality currency.

It’s safe to say that when the Kardashians went to visit, they were not prepared, nor educated.

During the trip, Khloe Kardashian posed elegantly in front of a monument dedicated to Fidel. To her, it was most likely glamorous, but to those who know how much harm that man has done it was horrendous. Fans pleaded for her to take the picture down, shaming her for her ignorance.

The Kardashians of course enjoyed their trip. Their privilege of wealth made them kings amongst a communistic  government. While surrounded by people who only dream of even having access to the Internet as often as they do.

To the Kardashians, Cuba is a perfect island, but to its residents, it’s not all that. It’s aesthetic charm cannot cover up the damage its people have faced.
