Is Being LGBT Really A Choice?

image

As a young teen, I know all the struggles of debating gender and sexuality. One of the main questions any person who identifies as LGBT is going to get is “When Did You Choose To Be…?”
But Is LGBT a choice?

You could rephrase this question many ways. Did you choose to be told “it’s a phase”? Did you choose to be neglected? Did you choose to be hated and oppressed?

LGBT is more than just pride marches and love. LGBT is not being able to take a shower because of dysphoria. LGBT is being told by Homophobic Christians that you’re going to Hell. LGBT is hating and not understanding yourself. But did we choose this?

If it’s not a choice, what is it? Is it based on environment? I grew up in a Christian home, at a School where the word “gay” was an insult. Yet, I never found myself being Homophobic, and I’m about as gay as you get (well, despite being closeted to half the people I know).

Scientists have had this debate for years. Recently, some evidence has been found to support a “Homosexuality Gene”. So is being Gay up to genes, environment or is it ultimately a choice?
