Summer is finally here and whether you’ll be travelling or staying home, I’m pretty sure you’ll want to watch a good TV show at some point. As it can be quite hard to find a show that is both good and full of representation (racial, LGBT+,…), here is a list of my four current favorites. I hope you’ll enjoy !

  1. Wynonna Earp

Wynonna-Earp-102-1

This show is very recent, so there’s only thirteen episodes so far. This show is based on a comic book series and focuses on the life of Wynonna Earp, a demon fighter that has to live up to her family’s legacy. Not only is this show really entertaining, but one of the lead characters is a black cop, and another lead female is queer. Plus, I won’t spoil anything, but we also get to see a very cute female/female relationship starting throughout the season ! And the creators of the show have said they have no intention of killing any of those two characters, so if you’ve been disappointed by shows like The 100, then Wynonna Earp is for you.

Warning : this show contains some graphic content and can be quite gory sometimes, so you might want to be careful if you’re triggered by this.

  1. Black Sails

BKS3

If you’re into Game of Thrones, you’re very likely to enjoy this show. The plot is set in the 17th century and focuses on stories of pirates on the island of New Providence. It has a lot of action, the plot is good and one of the lead characters, Max, is a queer woman of color. I haven’t watched the whole show just yet, but from what I saw it is quite diverse, the special effects are great and so is the story. So if you like adventure and have a lot of time ahead of you (the episodes are 50 minutes long and there are three seasons), go for it !

  1. Orange Is The New Black

S1Cast

This show is a classic, but the fourth season just aired and I had to add it in my list. This is probably the most diverse show you can find, with a lot of queer characters and many women of color. It focuses on very important and actual issues (racism, transphobia, life in prison, etc…), but it’s also a very beautiful show, with many strong characters that have amazing backstories – and it can be very funny sometimes, too. In case you don’t know what this show is about, it focuses on life in Litchfield, which is a prison for women.

  1. Avatar : The Last Airbender

Aang

This one is my personal favorite. This show is an animated series, and it’s originally made for children, but it has so many important messages. It focuses on the adventures of Avatar Aang and his friends, and their quest to fight the evil Fire Nation that wants to take over the world. It has a lot of diversity, as the main characters are people of color, but also disability representation, as one of the lead girls is blind. It teaches a lot of amazing lessons and values about life and relationships, but also addresses important issues : war, living in a totalitarian regime, child abuse, etc… I have to warn you, though : it will make you cry.

Here are four very good shows with a lot of diversity, in case you’re looking for something to binge watch. The first one is a horror/fantasy show, the second one is adventure/action, the third one is a more actual and realist drama, and the last one is an animated one, so whatever you like, I’m sure you’ll enjoy at least one of them. Happy watching !
