8 Tips for Applying Liquid Lipsticks

via lucylipstick.com

Whether you as much as apply makeup to simply go grocery shopping or know nothing about makeup at all, you’ve probably heard about the current hype around liquid lipsticks. Granted, the hype is justified since liquid lipsticks now come in many colours, formulas, quality and prices. They are much more long lasting than normal lipsticks and they are matte which is a quality a lot of people prefer their lipsticks to have.

If you are a regular applier of liquid lipsticks or you’re thinking of joining the bandwagon, there are some essential tips almost everyone misses.

1. Moisturise, moisturise and moisturise.

Liquid lipsticks are fantastic and really fun to shop for and use, but, let’s get real, they could be very damaging to your lips. I remember trying to remove this drugstore brand liquid lipsticks with my makeup remover and actual bits of my lip came out. Therefore, I wouldn’t call it important to moisturise. I would call it necessary. Even vaseline works great on the lips if you don’t have a good lip balm. Moisturising your lips before applying liquid lipsticks also helps set your lipstick in place.

2. Know the shape of your lips.

No, but actually know it. Don’t apply liquid lipsticks the same way you see makeup artists do, because that might not work for you. A lot of people apply a horizontal line on their bottom lip and a X shape on their top lip then fill the rest in, but this doesn’t work for thinner lips or one that don’t have a steep cupid’s bow. Work out which is the best way to apply your liquid lipsticks in a way that fits you and will cause the less mess. However, it is always best to apply lipstick to your bottom then top lip.

3. Use a lipliner.

If it’s in your budget, I would recommend using a lipliner that matches the colour of your liquid lipstick, especially if you haven’t mastered applying the lipstick yet. It’s best if the liner is slightly darker than the lipstick so you have a guide as to where to apply. Also if makes lips plumper if you apply more liner on the corners and arches of your lips. Depending on their quality, they might help your lipstick last longer.

4. Don’t use too much product.

This specially applies when your product is new. Make sure you rub the excess off on the top of your lipstick tube or else you might end up with too much liquid lipstick on your lip and wand. Such a mess can be really hard to fix.

5. Keep an earbud and makeup remover nearby.

Applied the perfect liquid lipstick to your lip but just as you filled in the corner you noticed an annoying smudge? Worry not! Apply some of your makeup remover to your earbud and carefully remove where the lipstick smudged your skin.

6. Reapply foundation around your lips.

After you’ve cleaned your smudge and neatly applied your lipstick, you can always trace your lips very thinly with a small brush and your foundation to have a clean finish. Even if you don’t have foundation on the rest of your face, a small amount of foundation will help your lips look pouty and neat in their new lipstick liquid.

7. Take your lipstick with you.

It was my first time wearing Colourpop’s liquid lipsticks and it was a dark pigmented brown lipstick, so I left the lipstick at home thinking it will never come off, especially because these lipsticks have a great reputation about staying power. After digging into one mushroom ravioli from Olive garden and going through three bowls of their bottomless salads, the inner parts of my lips were lipstickless and it was impossible to get the outer part off without makeup remover that I didn’t have on me. Therefore, no matter how good you think your lipstick is, take it with you.

8. Practice makes perfect.

Liquid lipstick isn’t “just lipstick”. It requires precision and steadiness or else it gets very messy. Just like a lot of other makeup products and applications, it requires practising to master it.
