When Did It Become A Crime To Cover Yourself?

burkiniThe burkini is a full swimsuit designed to cover the whole body in order to help some Muslim women dress modestly while engaging in western recreational activities.

Nice recently became the eleventh city in France to ban the burkini after the country banned the burqa five years ago. People who violate this ban risk a 38 euro fine. Sorry, but I find this absurd. Since when did it become a crime to want to cover yourself?

For a country like France to do this, a country that celebrates equality and freedom, banning the burkini is not compatible with their motto. I thought France was for liberté, égalité and fraternité. The ban on burkinis goes against several fundamental freedoms and I do not understand where French leaders are coming from at all. Women’s rights allow the right for women to cover up I mean if we are free to show our body what is really so wrong when we wish to cover it?

Associating a woman’s dress with terrorism is absolutely ridiculous. And that is what the French government are doing. You are inevitably allowing some to view the headscarf as a manifestation of extremism. Banning the burkini will allow others to single out a very vulnerable group in French society, because we are clearly associating Muslim women with terrorists just by the way they choose to dress, we are making them susceptible to be victims of violence.

And let’s discuss how this ban is racist and misogynist. Conservative mayors are clearly dictating what women should and should not wear. I do not fully believe that this ban was for the sole interest in preventing terrorism and violence. If France truly wanted to prevent violence in this way they would invest more into cautioning people about hate crimes and Islamophobia. Banning the burkini is just another way of telling Muslims you don’t want them there. But this ban doesn’t apply just to Muslim women, it has been found that non-Muslims wear the burkini too. So whether you want to cover your body for the sake of your Lord, your other half or yourself and your skin, then you’re going to have a pretty hard time at the beach.

You say Muslims need to integrate more but when they do you don’t like the way they try and balance the needs of western society and their faith. Odd. France is a secular state but shouldn’t secularism favour individual freedom? I do understand that many do not have the choice to cover up, they are forced to. In places like Iran it is law, however, that isn’t the case for many in France. We should be free to cover our body as we wish, we should be free to express ourselves in whatever way we wish to. We should not let white conservative males tell us how to dress. Someone deciding to swim while fully covered should not disturb others.
