Like many teens, I struggle with my mental health and anxiety. When I’m especially anxious, I have one thing that can really help me calm down and relax – my care box.

My care box is a medium-sized black box. It’s nothing much to look at. I keep it in my closet, next to my dresser. Anyone looking at it would think it was just a box I used for storage, but for me – it’s so much more. It’s filled with things that make me happy and calm me down. Whenever I’m anxious and at my house, I go to my room, pull out my care box, and try to calm down. My care box has helped me a lot with my anxiety and I would like to share how to put one together so they can potentially help someone else too!

First things first, you’ll need a box. Any box will do, as long as it’s big enough to hold a couple things. I like a box that doesn’t look like much to an onlooker, but you can also be really fun and creative and use a colorful, decorated box. Just pick something that makes you happy!

Once you have your box, all you need to do is fill it with things that are calming or make you happy. This can be anything at all, but if you’re having trouble thinking of something I’ll tell you what’s in mine:

  • a Harry Potter book
  • lavender essential oil
  • a bag of gummy worms
  • my favorite scented body butter
  • an old iPod Shuffle with my favorite relaxing songs on it
  • a picture of me and my friends
  • silly putty
  • an encouraging note
  • an old stuffed animal
  • friendship bracelet string

Of course, this is just what works for me. Everybody is different. What’s so great about making these boxes is that they can have literally anything in them! If what I have in mine wouldn’t make you happy and calm, you can put totally different stuff in yours. It’s all up to you!
