Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Chris Brown And His Downward Spiral

Chris Brown is back in the news amid claims of … you guessed it- domestic abuse. This time, however, the singer may have taken it to a whole new level. Chris Brown is definitely not the person with the cleanest record, however pulling a gun seems a little much -even for him. Of course, I’m by no means saying that the alleged events did not occur, it’s just a lot to process. While I  myself do not admire the singer, there are a lot of people my age that do and that consider Brown a role model. To see your role model condone domestic abuse is not the best image to set to a younger audience, even worse, said audience could mimic Brown’s activity.

When Chris Brown beat Rihanna in 2009, we were shocked- horrified, even. How could such a charismatic young singer, do such a thing? We called him a monster, someone capable of doing horrible things. But then they made a song together and we forgot about it. Now he’s back with another claim of domestic abuse, this time around, Brown allegedly assaulted victim Baylee Curran by pulling a gun on her.

Curran told police that Brown cocked the gun in her face and told her to “get the f*** out”. Brown was arrested but was later released on  August 31st, proving once again that real jail time doesn’t really exist for most celebrities. This claim also joins thea claim that Brown’s employee made earlier in the summer, where, again, he was called out for his violent tendencies. The drama is far from over as Curran continues

The drama is far from over as Curran continues her press tour, relaying versions of the event to anyone who will listen and Brown takes to social media to plead his innocence. Many bystanders are losing faith in Curran’s cry as bits of her past float to the surface. Supposedly, Curren’s past isn’t the cleanest either, she herself has faced allegations of theft, claims that, to some, sullied any allegations that she made against the singer. Recently, there has been talk of texts from Curran to a friend that reveal that the whole scenario was a ploy to teach Brown a lesson. However, Curran has no knowledge of these texts and neither does the person she supposedly sent them to. Her willingness to tell anyone and everyone about her near death experience also cast a shadow of doubt over the validity of her statement.

Of course, we don’t know what really happened, only Brown and Curran do. When it comes down to it, the situation is essentially a ‘he said’ ‘she said’ scenario-

He says he’s innocent

She says he’s not.

However, in most cases of domestic and sexual abuse in a relationship, the abused typically don’t speak up. Whether they’re worried for their safety or they’re concerned about the inevitable backlash, very few victims tell. And when they actually do tell, they’re called a liar- very similarly to how Curran is deemed to some. I get that we’ll probably never really know what happened, but who are we call B.S on someone’s story? The least we could do is actually listen to what may be a plea for help.

Of course, this also means that Brown may actually be innocent too, again we just don’t know. Maybe he was defending himself, maybe he was exercising his second amendment right (because, surprisingly, it does apply to more than just old white men). But we have to consider the facts, and the facts say that Brown has been accused of abuse in the past. Is it really merely a coincidence that here we are, watching a woman accuse him of violence… Again?
