Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

JoJo Is Using Her Comeback To Talk About Body Positivity

Calling all JoJo fans… she’s back! After experiencing many highs and many lows, JoJo has returned and graced our presence with her impeccable voice. Recently, she sat down with the Huffington Post and discussed her views on body positivity and body image, and how she has chosen to deal with it while being in the public eye.

When asked how she has been able to “navigate” the world of body image, positivity, and love while being in the public eye, JoJo first admits that, “it’s hard,” which is something everyday women can agree with. It is hard to feel good about yourself every day, especially when social media has had such an influence on the way we carry ourselves, dress, and portray ourselves to society and our Instagram followers.

JoJo goes on to explain that some days she feels good about herself, and other days she thinks, “Damn, you know, I’m not comfortable in the skin I’m in.” But JoJo wants you to know that feeling self-doubt from time to time isn’t out of the ordinary! She encourages women to find something they love about themselves and accentuate that. In her case, it’s her curves. She understands that she is petite and curvy, but instead of starving herself, she’s choosing to embrace and love the body she was given.

The most important lesson to take away from HuffPost’s sit-down with JoJo is this: do not dress for men, ladies. JoJo explains, “dressing to feel confident instead of dressing for the attention of men is something that works for me just in the way that it helps my self-esteem.” It’s okay to accentuate the parts of your body that you love, but the most important aspect of body love is that you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, and that you’re wearing it because you want to, not because someone else wants you to.

The singer encourages the audience to “celebrate other women” and embrace each other’s beauty by not being afraid to compliment each other. JoJo has come a long way, both in her musical success and body acceptance, yet still gets those days when she doesn’t like what she sees in the mirror. Her advice? “F that! This is how I am. I’m not gonna starve myself. I’m cool, I’m good.”

So ladies, let’s follow in JoJo’s footsteps and say “F that” to our uncomfortable, body-hating days, because we were given this body for a reason! We need to nurture our bodies, and find what we love about them because we only get one. Our bodies are our temples and there is something that we can all love about our own, whether it be our curves, our long legs, or our big eyes. So, don’t let those unrealistic #bodygoals get you down. Power through the rough days, and love yo’self because, you’re ravishing.
