Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

If My Mom Didn’t Have An Abortion, I Wouldn’t Be Here

Lets take it back to the 90’s. My mom was just about 22 years old. She had been in a long term relationship with an older guy all throughout high school, but it ended a couple years beforehand. She moved on to another guy, who was at first seemingly innocent. But as most 20-something year old’s back in the day, partying was her thing.

She didn’t have a lot of money, she didn’t have a stagnant place to stay. The guy she was with had already been divorced with children she was basically a second mother to. Despite all her partying and just being a naive 22 year old, she was always mindful of using protection and being on time with her oral contraceptives. Even with all the caution, the unthinkable happened: she found out she was pregnant.

She didn’t have the money, she didn’t have a good home for a child, and she had to depend on her current boyfriend for everything.

She had been drinking and partying without knowing she was pregnant, and most importantly, she knew this guy wasn’t the love of her life. He turned out to be a jerk and frankly, she didn’t want to be connected to him through a child. She also saw how crudely he treated his ex-wife and children so she didn’t want to be stuck in such a dangerous, dysfunctional position.

She felt as though if she went through with this, she would be obligated to stay with him. So she had an abortion. She told me that it was the hardest decision she ever had to make.

But looking back on it now, she’s so glad she did it. Because if she didn’t, she would be stuck with a man who treated her wrong, would be dirt poor trying to raise a child, and just wouldn’t be happy. Because if she didn’t, she wouldn’t have met the man of her dreams: my father, and had me: her pride and joy.

That doesn’t mean she doesn’t feel guilty, even though she shouldn’t. She had to do what was in the best interest of her and the tiny bundle of cells inside her uterus. She had to analyze the future and pick the best choice to make. And to this day, she knows she picked the right one. Pro-life advocates say that abortion is murder, abortion kills lives, but sometimes, they create them.
