Hard To Say Goodbye: 5 Reasons Why I Will Miss the Obamas

I know, it’s hard, but we must welcome our new president into the White House soon and as the months left until the Inauguration dwindle down, it’s time to start really saying goodbye to The Obamas. It will probably be a long time until we ever see a first family with such poise and elegance. The Obamas were truly the highlight of this whole political mess for the last eight years, and I’ll be the first to admit that it will be tough to see them go. But, we are moving straight into the future with a whole new first family,  and it will be better for all of us if we take the advice from that one Hallmark card, and we don’t cry because it’s over, but smile because it happened. Here are some of my favorite Obama family moments that I won’t minds smiling over on a rainy day.

1. When They Hosted The First ever White House Poetry Jam

The poetry jam was a night where dozens of poets performed at The White House. There were a variety of different styles and the night really accentuated the elegance and utter importance of spoken word. Whether it was in the form of spoken poems or rap songs about our founding fathers, the night was one to remember even if you weren’t actually there. The atmosphere created by the president and first lady was one that you could tell, even from behind a computer screen, was warm and comforting. For the first family to promote the arts in a society where they are not deemed a ‘real job’ is truly something amazing.

2. The Halloween Trick or Treat Halloweens

The president and first lady invited children from military families to the White House to trick-or-treat amongst the First Family. The way that they actually interacted with the children showed that they actually cared about the future generations. Anyone can say that they care about the children of the future, but who do you know that will personally invite 4,000 children to their house for a night of candy and fun?

3. The Annual Turkey Pardons.

I mean, come on. How could you not look forward to the annual tapings of the first family sparing a turkey’s (or two) life before the holidays? The event in itself is one huge dad joke, but behind the corniness of it all is a fun loving family. From president Obama with pure joy to Sasha and Malia who are probably over it before the ceremony even began, the Obamas carried out this tradition with the dynamic of a Black family that you just can’t help smiling over. Although the turkey pardoning is a tradition done by many other presidents in the past, and will probably be repeated by many other presidents in the future- something about the Obama’s pardoning made it much more amusing to watch than the others.

4. When Sasha Obama Met Ryan Reynolds

Even the president’s daughter fangirls from time to time. The photo captured the incredibly adorable moment when Sasha met actor Ryan Reynolds and, of course, could barely contain her excitement. The icing on the cake was Malia’s big sisterly thumbs up in the background because how great are you really doing if you don’t have Malia Obama’s approval? The moment perfectly encaptured the best parts of having a sister and meeting a celebrity.

5. Election Night of 2008

That moment when Barack Obama was elected the first black president of the United States and he was surrounded by his family and everyone was cheering still brings goosebumps to my skin and tears to my eyes. When he walked on stage hand in hand with his family, you could see the happiness in the very way in which they walked. It was the day that the Obamas proved that yes they could- and they did.

The Obamas beat the odds. They beat the stereotypes and the stigmas and they led our country for eight glorious years. We laughed with them, and we cried with them; the first family became our family and for that I am grateful. Perhaps it’s because it was the first presidency that I was conscious of or maybe it’s because I could see myself in every member of that family, but I have a hard time believing that any other first family could surpass the Obamas. Thank you for the past 8 wonderful years. You will be terribly missed.
