Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Mike Pence’s Neighbors Are Hanging Pride Flags On Their Houses

A northwest Washington, D.C. neighborhood is making national headlines this week in light of LGBTQ pride flags popping up on various houses throughout the neighborhood. “What’s so noteworthy about that?” you might think. Well, this happens to be the same neighborhood that the notoriously anti-LGTBQ and anti-human rights vice president elect Mike Pence resides in.

The former governor of Indiana and Trump’s soon-to-be VP has quite a history with his stances on LGBTQ issues. From blatantly opposing same-sex marriage and supporting conversion therapy, it’s safe to say that Pence is a destructive choice for VP and literally the worst ever. (Worse than Trump? Maybe.) His hateful viewpoints perpetuate the continuous discrimination against LGBTQ citizens. This kind of rhetoric only encourages bigotry and hate crimes against innocent citizens to continue. But his neighbors are hoping to possibly change his mind on LGBTQ issues.

One of Pence’s neighbors who is proudly hanging a pride flag on their house told ABC7 that it’s “a respectful message showing my disagreement with some of his thinking. I have no idea what [Mike Pence] will think about, but I hope he will change his mind. This is one way that I can show my disagreement”

Washington, D.C. reporter Suzanne Kennedy tweeted pictures of two houses with rainbow flags, suggesting that more houses might join in on the exhibition of discontent with Pence.

Though it seems unlikely that Mike Pence will see a pride flag flying in the wind on his way to work and change his mind about his (ridiculous) opposition of LGBTQ and human rights, it’s a nice sentiment to show solidarity and support of the LGBTQ community, especially in the wake of a soon-to-be vice president that doesn’t believe in their rights as citizens.
