“Trump is your president! Be proud, show him respect! This is our country and he is going to make it great again!” These were the things I heard at a protest a week ago, which was supposed to be against Trump, but the Trump supporters shortly found their own way to shut it down.
Respect? Is that what we should be giving Donald Trump? A man who mocked a disabled person? A man who has constantly dehumanized Muslims, Mexicans, LGBTQ+ people, African Americans, and basically the entire working class? A man who has filled the United States with hate? Who has objectified women and put them down simply because they did not want to be with him? You can read all of the other horrible, disgusting things Donald Trump has done, and, please, do not even get me started on Mike Pence.
But they want… respect? Interesting, and absolutely mind-boggling.
I think it is safe to say many of the people who voted for or support Trump, did not support President Barack Obama. I mean, think of it, these people never respected President Obama in his eight years in office. Still, to this day, they fail to call him President Obama, they will call him Mr. Obama. They spent both terms trying to forge birth certificates from countries in Africa, tried to shame him for being a “stoner”, called him a Muslim, and attempted to frame him for encouraging terrorist attacks (let us not forget who was in office during the biggest terrorist attack in America’s history). President Barack Obama has never had one problem with the law or gotten into any real legal trouble throughout both of his terms in office. Let’s face it: President Barack Obama is leaving office with a clean record, which is something majority of politicians can never say.
Apparently, we hate Trump because he is not “politically correct” and according to his supporters, we need somebody who is not politically correct and will say things the American people “need to hear.” So, what exactly does this mean? These people are basically saying we need a homophobic, transphobic, Islamophobic, misogynistic, racist bully in the White House to protect the rich white man’s rights as if they aren’t protected already.
On November 18, a 24-year-old man from Ohio tweeted about killing Donald Trump and now faces up to five years in prison for his tweet. On November 9, at Trump’s victory speech, a man in the crowd yelled, “Kill Obama.” Yet, nothing happened to him.
It is absolutely ridiculous that, after sitting and listening to President Barack Obama be disrespected time and time again for the past eight years, now conservatives are expecting us to show respect to a bigot. Show respect to a man who has dehumanized every single minority group in the United States. Show respect to a man who’s called women “pigs”, a man that has called Mexicans “rapists”, has placed a “ban” on Muslims, wanting to reverse gay marriage and saying that African American communities have “nothing to lose.” Remember, we hate Trump because of his beliefs, they hated Obama because of the color of his skin. Donald Trump, I do have something lose and you will never have my respect.
