Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Serena Williams is Engaged to a White Man — Let Her Live

It was just announced from various media sources and social media that the one and only Ms. Serena Williams is engaged. She announced it today on Reddit with a cartoon picture of her and her fiancee Alexis Ohanian (who also happens to be the co-founder of Reddit) proposing to her and a poem sharing how the proposal went. With all of this excitement and joy for Ms. Serena Williams, who also happens to be the greatest female athlete of this generation and ties the record for the most Grand Slam Single titles with a whopping 22 wins, there has been so much backlash and unnecessary hate that needs to be addressed.

With the announcement of her engagement comes the hate. As I go on Twitter to see the congratulation tweets, I see tweets of hate and animosity against her coming from all sorts of angles but particularly black men.

I have seen black men go against her and become mad that she is happy and engaged to someone who makes her happy who also happens to be white.

Not only are these men coming at her for her engagement to a white man, these same men were the ones slandering Ms. Williams calling her a ‘man’ and ‘she’s ugly’ and all sorts of ugly things against this powerful dominating female powerhouse, and it needs to stop.

We talk about how black men slander black women for all sorts of things from their ‘body counts’ to their own bodies to their hair to other countless things that are irrelevant. They slander them about our skin colour (particularly dark skinned black women) calling them all sorts of derogatory things which leave them broken and so hurt. They rebuild themselves from the hurt and begin to prosper in their own personal lives from their career to their health. From there, some of these women find love with white/non-black men and get slandered for it.

Black men who slander black women for all sorts of things and then getting mad at the same women who find love with white men are unnecessary. Let them live. Whichever and whatever way they love, you should congratulate them and respect their relationship. I am sorry fellas, but you can’t have your cake and eat it too; you can’t continue to slam black women and then be shocked and taken back that they are with someone of a different race. You men have to start respecting us as your fellow sisters and let us date and marry whomever we choose without being so judgemental about it.

For all the beautiful, intelligent, marvellous black women who are currently with someone who makes you happy that is not black, don’t let anyone stop you from your happiness. Don’t allow the questioning stop you from being with someone who makes your world whether the man be black, white, yellow, or blue.

To the black men who are reading this, I really hope that you understand that you guys don’t have to continuing to slander us black women. This piece isn’t meant to make you look bad but to highlight the negative behaviour you present to us far too often. We want you to stop the hate, and let us women live without being disrespected.
