Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Here’s What’s Going on in Mexico: #Gasolinazo

Mexico is currently undergoing the highest increase in the prices of gas that they have seen in over 20 years, and the people are outraged by this injustice. You may or may not have seen the hashtag #Gasolinazo trending on Twitter a couple of days ago. This trend was made by protestors and activists in Mexico informing people across the world what is going on in the country.

The government imposed a 20% increase in their gas prices, and the people have taken their anger to the streets all across Mexico, through protests because of the terrorizing effects this increase will have on them.

As gas prices spike up, and so does the consumer value. This leads to spike in prices of food and water.

One U.S dollar is equivalent to 20 Mexican pesos right now, and the minimum wage in Mexico right now is around 73 pesos, making the minimum wage about 4 U.S dollars, which isn’t enough to maintain a living.

Mexico is known to be a gas country as there are over 98 million barrels of reserves of oil, making it the 12th largest oil producer in the world as of 2016. The price of oil rose as high as 20.1% to 88 cents per liter, with diesel at 83 cents — the equivalent of 12 days of a minimum wage to fill a tank of gas, compared to the U.S.’s seven hours.

Over the course of these protests, 500 people have been arrested due to the protests and vandalism of over 250 commercial stores. The protests are now entering their 5th day, and they are getting more and more violent as each day pass. In Monterrey, it’s been reported that there have been 18 protestors arrested, 6 reporters injured and 1 child ran over in the course of an hour.

There are protests all over Mexico, but the question is why isn’t the media covering it? Why aren’t these protests being televised worldwide?
