Multiple Dead in Florida Airport Shooting — Why Do These Tragedies Keep Happening?

Social media and news outlets are now being flooded with information regarding a shooting that occurred in a Fort Lauderdale, Florida airport this afternoon. While information is being reported and updated, right now it is estimated that five people have been killed and eight have been injured. While evacuation of the airport continues, the suspect is reported to be in custody.

Accordion to the Gun Violence Archive, this is the sixth mass shooting this year. Yes — you heard that right. In our six days of 2017, there have already been six mass shootings. That’s an average of one mass shooting a day. This year has barely even started and we’ve already lost 200 lives to gun violence at large. Why are we not taking the proper precautions to prevent these travesties?

The 2nd Amendment means a lot to conservatives, and I can fully understand that. But it’s time for our legislators to find a compromise between our Constitutional rights and what is best for the well-being of the American people. The world where our founding fathers wrote the 2nd Amendment isn’t the same world we live in today. We’ve made advancements in the gun industry, and things are different. We have to find a compromise to not only appease people on both sides of the political aisle, but also to ensure the safety of all Americans. If our Congressmen and women continue to sit back and do nothing about this plague of gun violence, the mass shooting rates I stated above will only get worse.
