Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Women Defying Gender Roles At The Golden Globes

As you know, The Golden Globes is tonight, and if you’re anything like me and my family, you’ve been watching the live coverage since the second it came on. I love listening to people being interviewed, and seeing what everyone has worn. There were so many lovely people there, Lily Collins looked like a princess. Kerry Washington looked like a beautiful goddess. Kristen Bell and Mandy Moore rocked the red carpet,  Rami Malek looked dapper as always and Gina Rodrigez looked so beautiful I almost dropped my phone, but there were two women in particular who really stood out to me.

While someone else was being interviewed I saw Even Rachel Wood walking down the red carpet in what looked like to be a tuxedo, but I wasn’t entirely sure. I didn’t think anyone would be brave enough to do that, then later on in the night there she was being interviewed by Ryan Seacrest.

“Dresses aren’t a requirement. You don’t have to wear one. Just be yourself because your worth is more than that.”

She told him. She also mentioned that her outfit was a tribute to David Bowie which was a lovely thing of her to do. Later on in the night, Octavia Spencer, nominated for her incredible performance in Hidden Figures, walked onto the red carpet also looking like a goddess in her all black tux. During her interview she talked about how, “young girls, our future STEM girls, will be inspired by Hidden Figures.”

Both of these incredible women showed up wearing tuxes to a huge event and that is very important to me and other young girls. We need more women to do things like this and show young girls that it’s okay to be yourself. Some girls and women just don’t feel comfortable in dresses and it’s totally okay if you don’t want to wear one. Never be afraid to be yourself!
