Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Has the Beauty Cult Gone Too Far?

Not long ago, I saw a new advertisement which had the purpose of making people with low self-esteem want a magic stick against wrinkles so that they can look irresistibly young and prettier after they use it. Success guaranteed. These days, we should be used to commercials like this, right?

A woman named Lizzy introduced herself by saying she hadn’t gotten plastic surgery yet. I wasn’t really sure what I was supposed to do with that information. What was Lizzy’s message to us? Does it mean that at some point in everyone’s life they are meant to go under the knife?

It made me think about our society in general when it comes to looks. Just a few hours back, my Snapchat has been upgraded and I’ve discovered a new photo filter. Unlike the dog one (SO original, sigh) – it kind of made me feel like there was a hidden message in it. I think the meaning of the filter that makes your face look like a painting was to point out how hidden girls are nowadays under tons of makeup.

Just a quick research on YouTube and Instagram convinced me that there are thousands of tutorials telling us how to cover ourselves in makeup. I’m not saying makeup is wrong. I just think girls (and boys) should know when it’s time to put their eyeshadow palette down and walk away from the mirror, so that their face doesn’t look like it was raped by a pencil.

We are governed by looks these days. Whether we would like to admit it or not, looks play a great part in our day to day life. No one is themselves anymore. We have lost the true definition of beauty which used to be looking great both on the inside and outside. Now we have changed the meaning of true beauty to how someone looks on the outside with the huge help of course from the influential TV shows, movies and magazines. We are losing ourselves to a world of contouring, blending and whatever is trending in the makeup world and with every new video, I’m petrified that we’ll be walking contoured skeletons very soon. People with no substance.

There are so many trends that we think we should follow, from perfectly-done eyebrows to thigh gaps to visible collarbones. But while trying to reach the idolized shape, we may cause serious damage to our health. I’m talking about eating disorders. I understand it is absolutely necessary in this new world we live in to have those perfect Instagram and Snapchat duck-face posts. I do get it and I respect it but it shouldn’t be achieved at the cost of our health. We shouldn’t forget to love ourselves and respect our bodies, no matter how hard it is. Some people are built to have a gap in between their legs and some aren’t, but that’s just life. It doesn’t mean we should hate ourselves or lose who we are and destroy our bodies to get the mentioned thigh gap.

The point is that if we weren’t this obsessed with our appearance, the advertisements like Lizzy’s, supporting a radioactive goodbye-wrinkles stick would have absolutely no chance. Fingers crossed, we’ll learn to love our bodies the way they are and remain healthy.
