How To Find The Perfect Therapist

“Looking for a therapist is like looking for a proper pair of shoes; you need to try on more than one pair to find the right one”

Seeking therapy is a completely normal thing to do. Sometimes we just need someone who will sit down with us for an hour or so and just listen to us. However when discussing extremely private matter you must be able to trust whoever it is that you’re speaking with and often times you can’t just tell your deepest darkest secrets to some person you don’t even know. It takes time to build a proper trusting relationship with your therapist. So here are 5 tips to help you find the therapist just right for you!

  1. Try breaking the ice. Often times when meeting new people it can be completely awkward and weird especially if they’re asking completely evasive questions and they’re aware of this as well! Try cracking a few jokes and ask them about their day. Learn a little about them while they’re learning about you. Remember it’s only weird if YOU make it weird.
  2. Don’t be afraid to talk about yourself. During the first few sessions they will ask you a lot of questions because they’re trying to “figure you out”. They want to know who you are and how you think. Once they figure this out then they can begin helping you!
  3. Set up limits. If certain topics make you uncomfortable and triggering don’t hesitate to tell them! Remember they are there to help you and make you as comfortable as possible.
  4. Have a parent with you. I know it’s super embarrassing to have your mom or dad coming into your sessions with you but having someone you know and you’re familiar with you can make things easier.
  5. Give them another shot. If you didn’t like the way the first session went still go. Go see them a couple times after that and if you’re still convinced it isn’t the right fit move onto another!
