Viola Davis Becomes The First Black Actress To Score 3 Oscar Nominations!

This morning, the Academy Awards announced their yearly nominations for one of the most coveted awards throughout “awards season” – the Oscar award. The internet went ablaze with the possibility of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ‘EGOT’ (an Oscar, Tony, Emmy and Grammy), La La Land’s whopping 12 nominations, but most importantly, Viola Davis’ 3 nominations, which made her the first black actress to ever receive 3 nominations throughout the show’s history.

Her first nomination was scored in 2009 for the film Doubt, about a priest trying to “upend the church’s strict customs,” for which she was nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actress’; The Help, a movie about racism based during the civil rights era for which she was nominated for ‘Best Actress’; and finally, Fences, a movie about Tony Maxson, a man who dreams about becoming a baseball player only to end up hurting his family, for which she was nominated, once again, for ‘Best Supporting Actress.’

About her nomination, Viola said, “Thank you to @TheAcademy for recognizing this extraordinary, important film and my work in it. Thank you Denzel for being at the helm!” via Twitter.
