The Trump Administration Has Frozen $221 Million Sent By The Obama Administration To Palestine

It has been reported that the Trump administration has frozen the $221 million that was sent to Palestine by the Obama administration just hours before Trump’s inauguration. The order was sent by the former Secretary of State John Kerry, who served during Obama’s second term and is now going to be reviewed by The State Department to ensure that the payment would meet the Trump administration’s priorities.

The money was sent discreetly to Palestinian authorities, which is an issue to members of the GOP who had been opposing to do so. The United States has been an avid ally of Israel throughout the Israeli and Palestinian conflict for land, as well as through general history. However, the Obama administration had previously been opposed to the construction of new settlements, which is not the case for President Trump who is expected to be supportive of Israel’s settlements.

The Congress, nonetheless, had already previously approved of Palestinian funding in 2015 and 2016. US Agency for International Development sent $355 million in 2015 and $317 million in 2016.

The money, which comes from the U.S. Agency for International Development and is to be used for humanitarian aid in the West Bank and Gaza, “is to be used to fund humanitarian aid in the West Bank and Gaza, to support political and security reforms and to help prepare for good governance and the rule of law in a future Palestinian state, according to the notification sent to Congress.”
