The American singer and actress, Selena Gomez, recently revealed the trailer of a ‘passion project’ she’s been working on: the best seller, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher is turned into a series under her production.
Thirteen Reasons Why is a Young Adult book, where the main character, Hannah, has committed suicide and has 13 reasons why. Hannah records her reasons on tapes, a tape per person and gives these tapes to those behind them, one of her main rules being to pass the tapes on or else they will be revealed in a very public manner.
The book was released in 2007, and it includes themes related to reputation, betrayal, violence, death and guilt. The beginning of the blurb goes as follows:
“You can’t stop the future.”
“You can’t rewind the past.”
“The only way to learn the secret . . . is to press play.”
The book conveys a lot of emotion and feelings. A quote that sticks out in the book says, “I’m listening to someone give up. Someone I knew. Someone I liked. I’m listening. But still, I’m too late.” -Clay, Cassette 3: Side B, p. 146.
The main cast of the series includes Katherine Langford, who plays Hannah and Dylan Minnette, who plays Clay, the protagonist. The series will premiere on Netflix on the Mar. 31.
