New York’s Federal Court Temporarily Stops Trump’s Muslim Ban

In response to the many protests at airports nationwide and the questionable morality behind Trump’s Muslim ban, New York Judge Donnelly has issued a “stay” in response to the issue. “A stay is a suspension of a case or a suspension of a particular proceeding within a case. A judge may grant a stay on the motion of a party to the case or issue a stay sua sponte, without the request of a party.”

This stay only applies to those in the United States and it is only temporary, however, the court can rule it to be permanent at a future date. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) a non-partisan, non-profit organization whose stated mission is “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States,” was the main organization that accomplished the issuing of this stay, with the example of two Muslim citizens, Hameed Khalid Darweesh and Sameer Abdulkhaleq Alshawi.

While there is a nearly unanimously positive response to this brave move, there will also be a pretty strong backlash to this act in the imminent future. Although Trump’s inevitable response will likely not be to praise Donnelly, many others are assuring the judge that she is most definitely doing the right thing.

For this ban to be achieved in more states, the ACLU will need to present more cases of other Muslim immigrants affected. Continue calling you state representative with cases that you know or tweet at the ACLU on Twitter.
