Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Meet Bernie Sanders, The Fashion Icon

I think it’s an understatement that we all know who Bernie Sanders is. The cute old dude from Vermont; the independent senator with presidential hopes; the should’ve-been presidential nominee for the democratic party (thanks a lot, DNC… and Hillary Clinton). Now, though, it seems that everyone’s democratic socialist political fave has taken up a new role in our society: fashion icon.

Last month, fashion designer Demna Gvasalia sent male models down the runway wearing clothes inspired by Bernie’s standard look: khakis, shirt and tie, and sweaters. Even better, each article of clothing was emboldened with Bernie’s campaign logo, but instead reading “Balenciaga”, signifying the deep cultural impact Bernie has conducted. Who knew that even the fashion world could feel the Bern?

No one had any doubt that Bernie would have a lasting impact on our society. At the beginning of his campaign, no one would have guessed that he would even come close to contending with Hillary in the 2016 democratic primaries, yet he did. He inspired millions of young activists to stand up against corruption, injustice, and inequality and fight for a political revolution. His efforts will have lasting impacts and significant implications on our nation’s political future. But I don’t think anyone would have guessed he would have an influence in fashion… not even Bernie himself.

After being asked by CNN host Jake Tapper about his apparent fashion influence, Bernie seemed delighted by the designer’s nod.

“I think, of my many attributes, being a fashion maven is not one of them,” he responded.

Overall, Bernie’s reaction will easily make you smile, making him out to be even more likable than he was before. I think it’s safe to say that he’s the cute little political grandpa we all need. Want to see the full clip of Bernie’s reaction? Check it out here:
