Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Why I Think Everyone Should Go Away for College

Going away for college was the best decision I have ever made. Give or take I’m only 413 miles away from home, STILL, I’m far enough to be having the time of my life. College is the most opportune time with countless adventures, experiences, and lessons to be had- which is why everyone should go away for college.

Leaving home was the best decision I’ve ever made but also my hardest. I was comfortable at home. I had solid group of friends, a happy and healthy relationship, my family, and going to college at home wouldn’t be so hard on my parents’ wallets, however I still went away because my mom hung “I never got to go away for college so I really want you to experience it” over my head. However, like always, mom was right. Forced against my will I went off and I’m loving every second of it.

Of course there was an adjustment period, the 2 months where you ask yourself “Did I make the right decision?” and in my case, doubt that I did and even want to transfer back home. However, in time you’ll discover that the answer is yes, yes you did. Growth and maturity you find in college comes from being forced into situations that are unfamiliar, new, uncomfortable and often situations that scare you.

Being away from home forces you to be truly independent, relying only on yourself. As scary as independence is, it’s also a gift. No longer do you have to ask your parents about every move or memory you wish to make. With this independence I’ve discovered my favorite memories, like taking a trip to Newport Beach at 3AM and standing on the pier talking about the expanse of the ocean and whether or not mermaids exist with my friends and simultaneously eating donut holes and corndogs.

Being away from home also gives you a greater appreciation of home and family. Personally, my family is my number one priority in life- they are the embodiment of who I am and the fabric of my being. I didn’t think I could learn to appreciate and love them more than I already did but I found myself calling my mom everyday just to tell her something as simple as the Skittles I ate for breakfast that day. Despite the fact that your support system is far away, their nature doesn’t wane, your independence is being gained but you always have someone to lean on.

Now, I’m only 413 miles away from home and still in state, but going away is going away. I understand that going away for college is a privilege and an opportunity that isn’t available to everyone. However, given the opportunity, I encourage you to take that leap of faith and maybe even work towards going away as a goal. With countless scholarships and other forms of financial aid, going away for college isn’t as unattainable as it may seem.

So, despite the fact that home will always be where the heart is, if granted the chance to go away for college, no matter how far, take it. It is an unforgettable opportunity with friends, adventures and memories that’ll last a lifetime. Now is the prime time to be brave and dive into the unknown and completely new. I leave you with the wise words of someone who was relevant as we were kids and still remains relevant in this time of decision:

“You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!” -Dr. Seuss
