Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Meet the 22 Year Old Who Already Works for NASA: Tiera Guinn

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is increasingly growing and profitable field, but is marketed by White men. Because our history books only show men going into space, and commercial only advertise male engineers or scientist, it dwindles the aspiration of impressionable, young girls. This is precisely why movies like Hidden Figures are so Important. Hidden Figures brought to the forefront, Black Women who not only participate in STEM fields but also excel in them and are even capable of leading men.

Tiera Guinn shows us that this is still true. At just 22 years old, Guinn has already landed a job As a Rocket Structural Design and Analysis Engineer for the Space Launch System that aerospace company Boeing is building for NASA.  According to the HuffingtonPost, essentially what she does, “designs and analyzes parts of a rocket that she said will be one of the biggest and most powerful in history.”

Guinn has been planning for this moment her entire life and like any mother, Guinn’s mom saw the potential in her before she saw it in herself.

“When [my mom and I] would go to the grocery store, she would get me to clip coupons [and] put it in my coupon organizer,” Guinn told WBRC News. “By the time we got to the register, I’d have to calculate the exact total, including tax. And I did that since I was six years old,” reported HuffingtonPost.

“One day I saw a plane fly by and I just had this realization, ‘huh, I can design planes. I’m going to be an aerospace engineer,”’ Guinn said.

According to the HuffingtonPost, Guinn will be graduating MIT with a 5.0 GPA and is on a clear path to success.

We wish her the best of luck in all of her endeavors and know that she will continue to inspire young girls around the world. This what #blackgirlmagic looks like.
