Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

This is Why You Should Ditch M.A.C. Cosmetics

As most avid makeup lovers probably know, M.A.C. is often put in the spotlight for many reasons. Whether it be their constant new releases, the fact they test on animals, or problematic behavior in general, there seems to be a never-ending stream of articles about the brand.

So, without further ado, here are 3 reasons it’d benefit you to ditch M.A.C.

They Test On Animals: M.A.C. Cosmetics is, unfortunately, one major brand which tests its products on animals. Although their website may state that they “only test where required by law,” this still means that some part of their product, if not all of it, is tested on animals. M.A.C. also claim to be against animal testing, but yet choose to sell in mainland China; a country where animal testing is required in order to sell their product. Although some may defend this choice by saying that the company only does it to make money, it is still an independent choice they are making. Brands such as Too Faced, NARS, and even drugstore brands like Milani and e.l.f. choose not to test on animals, and still make great products and are profitable. Their ‘Vibe Tribe’ Collection: Late last year, M.A.C. released a collection aptly named ‘vibe tribe,’ claiming the collection was inspired by Coachella. M.A.C.’s shameless cultural appropriation is extremely harmful as they are using Native American culture as ‘inspiration’ for the collection, essentially using the culture itself as an accessory. Music festivals such as Coachella are also inherently culturally appropriative: so using Coachella as a defence mechanism is not really the greatest excuse.

The Quality Isn’t That Great: Considering the price point, M.A.C.’s quality is over-hyped. Many other brands (especially ones which aren’t culturally appropriative and don’t test) produce significantly better quality products for much cheaper, or equal, prices.

M.A.C. Cosmetics is brutally over-hyped, and their horrifically damaging cultural appropriation has been ignored for far too long. If there’s one makeup brand we should have left in 2016, it’s M.A.C. Cosmetics.
