Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Is The Sims 4 World More Equal Than Our Own?

The Sims is a life simulation video game that has been around for almost two decades and over that time it has gained more and more popularity. This is unsurprising, considering it now allows more freedom and equality that we can comprehend. Last summer there was an update for Sims 4 that has officially removed all gender boundaries, which has improved the game completely.

In 2017, around 20 countries have legalized gay marriage. Yet The Sims have been in support of it since Sims 3, which came out in 2009. Not only that, Sims 4 allows you to change a character’s gender at any point, you can choose which character will be able to give birth and The Sims also allows you to customize a character voice, clothes, and physique despite their gender. This is what make The Sims enticing to young people, in particular, the LGBTQ+ community, as this new update is much more trans and non-binary inclusive than any of the past games. Also, The Sims have always allowed all genders, races and religions to be eligible for any job, with completely equal pay for everyone. In the U.K. women earn just over 18% less than their male counterparts and women in the U.S. earning 20% less than their male counterparts. (The gender wage gap for women of color is bigger than that of white women.)

All of these new updates are working towards making sure everyone in society feel included, particularly the LGBTQ+ community and with The Sims being such a recognizable video game it is so much easier for this to happen. The Sims have always been ‘ahead of their time’ in relation to equality, but now more than ever the entertainment franchise is taking bigger and bigger steps towards encouraging and supporting equality. Hopefully soon more and more games, books and movies will be created that cater for the minorities in society.
