Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Why Religious Groups Should Stop Pushing Their Agendas in Africa

Every year, hundreds of missionaries travel to Africa, teaching them their beliefs and points of views. Throughout the years, these “mission trips” have become more and more like those taken by early colonizers.People like those of Portuguese and British descent, among many others, have ripped Africa apart by continuing to send people to teach the indigenous people about their personal beliefs, something that simply isn’t needed. And here’s why

1. If you or your religious group are going to Africa to help them just because you think that they are poor, I’m sure that there are poor people in your neighborhood too that could just as well use your help, Believe it or not, you don’t need to spend thousands of money just to go to Africa when you can get a car and help people in the same way.

2. Africa has its own beliefs! Bantu, Dinka, and Mumboism are just a few of their varying religious beliefs and cultural ceremonies, that are marginalized because of the Christian supremacy. African’s religion tells stories of their culture, where they came from and what happens to them when they die, erasing a religion is erasing an entire culture.

3. Traditional African religion is based on oral traditions, bringing Christianity for them is (again) erasing an entire culture and language. Just because you think that your culture and religion is more important than others (which it isn’t) you are erasing important parts of a cultural expression.

4.If you or your religious group really want to go to Africa to help them, then by all means go!  But don’t use religion as an excuse, don’t use God for your disguised racism. Help people because you want to, not because it’s your ticket to Heaven.

So please, don’t praise anyone that is going to Africa to bless African people, they don’t need that. Praise people who help and care for lives, not salvation.
