Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Laughter Is the Best Medicine

Study breaks are a necessity in order to properly study. Unfortunately, it’s really easy to get distracted during that break. The next thing you know two hours later, you know all about the drama that went down at during Scotty’s party but your study books are long forgotten. Which is why I plan a specific activity to do during a study break. One activity in particular: watch cheesy sitcom.

I know it most studies and teachers tell you to only take a 5 to 10 minute break, but after I’m finished solving a series nearly impossible calculus problems, I need more than a five minute break. The idea of watching a show to not get distracted probably seems a bit crazy too, but trust me, it works.

Let’s say you just finished kicking those calculus problems butt, but it was completely draining and now all you wanna do is take a nap. You still have APUSH and APES to study for, but you’re in desperate need of a study break. Normally you’d what just relax and check social media for 10 minutes. Theoretically. But we all know those 10 minutes turn in to 30, then a hour, and the next thing you know there’s no more studying.

But if you designate a specific activity, with a specific time limit, it is easy to remember to go back to studying.

I personally love to watch sitcoms during study breaks because they’re always within 30 mins, their plotlines aren’t too riveting to where I can’t focus when it’s over, and the laughter they invoke actually energizes me. So when the episode is over, I feel refreshed and ready to study again. Well, as ready as anyone can be for studying.

My favorite comedies to watch are the Mindy Project, New Girl, The Office (both versions), Girlfriends, Martin, and Brooklyn 99. I typically only watch the Mindy Project, New Girl, and Girlfriends when I’m super stressed during study breaks because while their plot and storylines can be a bit too interesting at times, those are my favorite comedies. I watch The Office, Martin, and Brooklyn 99 when I’m tired and just need a few laughs to energize me after studying.

Don’t just take my word for it. Try it. During study breaks, don’t check social media, watch a sitcom, destress and get back to working towards that A in APUSH.
