Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

The Oscars Learned to Embrace Diversity. When Will the Grammys?

In the past year, the Grammys and Oscars have been accused of being racist for not giving POC their well-deserved recognition. Let’s be honest here: everything that a POC achieves, they worked twice as hard than any white person achieving the same feat. We are not seen as professionals as white people; this is a fact.

However, the Oscars seem to be learning from those critiques, while this is something the Grammys have failed to do. For another year, they didn’t give any big awards to POC. Instead, they decided to stick with their trend of awarding white mediocrity over beautiful, masterful work by POC.

This year we are about to see POC rising and winning big awards, big roles, and big recognition! It’s about time; we deserve it! A black film (Moonlight) won the best picture award at the Oscars. Best Actor in Supporting Role was won by Mahershala Ali for Moonlight and Best Actress in Supporting Role went to Viola Davis for her role in Fences. Now that’s is some black history in Black History Month! This is the first time since the 2007 Oscars that more than one black person has won an Academy Award on the same night. Thank you, Oscars Academy. Maybe next time don’t give an award to an abuser, but you’re getting there!

All in all, not every award has to be given to a POC, but they instead need to give real opportunities to POC and not just use them for views and clicks (are you listening to this Grammys Academy?). We just need a fair recognition of our values and talents just as much as white people do.
