Why Breastfeeding in Public Should Not Be a Big Deal

There are many reasons why women should never be shamed for breastfeeding. Women are continuously being put down for taking proper care of their children.

There is much hypocrisy in this issue. An example of this is, people complain that they don’t want to see women’s breasts in public because it is too revealing or it is disgusting. But women’s bodies are put on display for anything from clothing ads, to undergarment models. Breastfeeding is a natural way to feed a child. This is why breasts should not be sexualized. Women were born with breasts for the sole reason to feed their children. They were not born with them to be taken as a sexual object and nothing more. If a women is somewhere and her child his hungry, she should be able to feed her child without getting rude stares or degrading comments being thrown at her.

What makes this issue difficult is that we have people with a great deal of influence and power downgrading women who breastfeed in public. An example of one of these people would be Donald Trump. He called a woman “disgusting” for asking for a court break to breast pump for her daughter. Was the U.S. President trying to have the baby starve? I thought that having power and being a president meant leading the country. Not humiliate the female population of the country because women need to breastfeed. Another example of this is when New Hampshire State Rep. Josh Moore stated on Facebook that men should be allowed to grab the nipples of breastfeeding mothers. He said that this should be allowed to happen if the law regarding whether women are allowed to show their breasts in public passed. How is this right? Bernie Sanders explained how I feel best when he said, “As a society we should never stigmatize women for breastfeeding in public.” Hillary Clinton also agreed when she said, “We need to support all working mothers.” What is interesting about all of this is that the people who have the most problems with breastfeeding in public are Republicans. You would think that since Donald Trump has five children, that he would understand. Why do they care so much? Once again Republicans have a hard time understanding that people make their own decisions for their body. Not anyone else’s.

If more people would stop sexualizing breasts and breastfeeding, women would not have to hide themselves and their children for doing something 100% natural.
