Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Plot Twist: What If Barack Obama Were To Be France’s Next President?

“Oui on peut” (translation: “Yes we can”), that is the slogan of an unexpected potential candidate for France’s Presidency.

It first started as a joke but French people are actually voting a petition to convince Barack Obama to run for presidency.
As of Mar. 1, the petition has gained more than 43,000 signatures, but the goal, set for Mar. 5, is to gather 1 million. The campaign has its own website and many posters have been place all over Paris.

The fact that this kind of joke-driven campaign has gained momentum is not surprising seeing the tensions caused by the rise of the far-right party of Marine Le Pen and the overall confusing elections that French people have to go through this year. A few days ago there was a heated demonstration against a Marine Le Pen rally so the urge for Obama to run for President might be a desperate call.

One of the organizers of this campaign said:

“There isn’t one man or woman that we can project ourselves onto, someone we would want to vote for and fight for without hesitation, someone who unites people and has a strong aura”

The website says that Barack Obama has the best résumé in the world for this job and that it would be a great lesson of democracy for the whole planet to elect a foreigner as French President.

The only problem is that the ballot is not open to non-French citizens, so despite the 8 year-long experience of the former U.S. President, it seems unlikely that he could lead the country of cheese and wine to a better future.

But some left-wing candidates that actually have the citizenship have progressive projects that people might want to look into, one of them being Benoît Hamon, often referred to as the French Bernie Sanders.
