Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

The Most Thought Provoking Lines in Dear Evan Hansen

Broadway has brought countless aspects of life to the stage. The theater has taught us lessons, made us laugh, made us cry, and definitely spoken to our souls. A new musical, called Dear Evan Hansen is all of that and more. Somehow they have managed to make an entire audience feel every emotion in one night, and here are some of the gut-wrenching lines that left us all in tears.

“I’ve learned to slam on the break before I even turn the key”

This is a line that speaks to the inner (and outer) outcast in all of us. It’s easy to have fear of rejection and humiliation, and it’s even easier to assume it will happen. This sums up what it feels like to have anxiety. You get so used to constantly being scared of what’s to happen, that you miss out on what’s right in front of you. Figuring “it’s easier to not try at all” is a thought that is a major road bump, yet it comes as second nature once you do it enough.

“When you’re falling in a forest, and there’s nobody around, do you ever really crash or even make a sound?”

Wow. Deep, huh? Crashing and burning when no one is watching can be terrifying. It just adds to the thought that no one cares because no one has noticed. It’s a feeling I’m sure most of us are familiar with, the feeling that no one cares. The feeling that if you just disappear, no one would notice and the world would continue on without you.

“No one deserves to disappear”

You didn’t think I’d leave it on that note, did you? Well neither did the writers of the musical. “Disappear” is a song about how everyone plays an important role in life, and no matter what it is, you deserve to be remembered. This one line is a reminder that you ARE valuable and you ARE important.

“All you gotta do is just believe you can be who you want to be”

The power of the mind is magical. If you believe something in your mind, the rest of you tends to follow suit. This line is saying that you can be absolutely whoever you want to be! It’s all about your mentality and how you think of yourself. So dig deep to the true person inside of you and stop hiding them, because I’m sure they’re pretty amazing.

“Even when the dark comes crashing through, when you need a friend to carry you, and when you’re broken on the ground, you will be found”

Personally, hearing these lines made me very emotional as it gave me the most hope I’ve had in a very long time. I’ve learned that it’s alright if you’re broken. It’s alright if you’re torn and far from the light, but it is integral that you know you have people who are there for you. There are so many people in life that care, love, and want to protect you. You are so lucky.

Now, these are just a few of the beautiful lines (just in act one!) from Dear Evan Hansen. I could write a thousand novels on why this is the most relevant, helpful, and inspiring musicals of today. Instead, I’m going to encourage you to listen to the soundtrack and go see the show because it has incredible potential to change your life.

Dear Evan Hansen, Today is going to be a good day and here’s why: because today, today at least you’re you- and that’s enough.
