Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Remembering Corey Haim 7 Years Later

Corey Ian Haim was a Canadian born actor who gained extreme popularity in the 1980’s. He was in a number of films that went to the top of the box office, like The Lost Boys and License To Drive. Although fame and success were at his feet ever since he was a teenager, he dealt with several hardships all throughout his life. Unfortunately, on March 10th, 2010 Corey Haim passed away from Pneumonia at only the age of 38. With his strength, talent, kindness, and courage, Corey Haim has left a legacy on this earth and has become a remarkable role model for many to look up to.

Ever since he was a teenager, Corey Haim battled a drug addiction. Although many shamed and ridiculed Corey for his openness about his drug addiction, it truly shows the courage and strength he had. He spoke about it to help others in need. In an A&E reality show called, The Two Coreys, Corey Haim disclosed one of his personal struggles to the world. Four episodes into the first season, it was revealed that Corey Haim dealt with heart problems. When asked about that particular episode in a 2006 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Haim stated: “It was my choice. I had these palpitations, like panic attacks from the abuse I’ve put my body through. When he [Corey Feldman]  felt one of them from the beginning to end, he cut the cameras, pulled me aside, ripped my mike off, and said, ”Dude, I need you just to breathe right now.” Then he said, ”Do you want to help other people and maybe show the side effects or after effects of what we did when we were kids, man?” …. I thought it was a brilliant idea, so I did it.”  It takes a lot of strength and courage to publicize such a struggle in order to help others. It takes someone remarkable to sacrifice their privacy for the sake of others.

Through the believability he had in himself and the determination within him, Corey Haim always sent out the message to never give up. Due to Hollywood’s ignorance, it became very hard for Corey Haim to acquire a role in a movie because they constantly judged him for the mistakes he’s made in the past. However, that didn’t stop Corey from working hard to get back to acting, something he had an incredible passion for. Corey worked his way up slowly and was grateful every step of the way. A major accomplishment for Corey Haim was when he got a cameo in the comedy-action film Crank 2: High Voltage. Reflecting back to the first day of filming, Haim stated: “My first day of filming, I went in my camper for a minute, and I just started crying, because I was, like, home. And I’m just so grateful. It’s a cameo. But, like, Ricky Schroder did a cameo in Crimson Tide, and then boom! He got NYPD Blue.” Although a cameo is a small part in a movie, Corey Haim saw that as an opportunity and made the best of it. From a cameo, Corey worked his way up to getting the lead role in a 2010 thriller, The Hostage Game. No matter how big or how small the role was, Corey Haim gave it his all. It’s truly remarkable what can happen when you don’t give up on yourself and have faith in yourself. When thinking back on all he has done, Haim said:

“I want people to learn from me, see I’m human, and understand that I make mistakes just like they do, but it doesn’t have to consume you. You’ve got to walk through the raindrops, and that’s totally what I am trying to do.”

This quote reflects on the person he was, an individual who did what he could to help others in the process of helping himself. He was truly a selfless soul who only aspired to do good in this world. In addition to having an incredible amount of strength and courage, Corey Haim possessed a monumental amount of kindness in his heart. He was extremely generous. Corey Haim’s ex-fiancé, Holly Fields, spoke about Haim’s generousity in an interview with Radar Online. Fields stated: “I remember one time Corey had spent the day at an autograph signing and even though he was completely broke at the time, when he got paid at the end of the day he went straight to Petco and blew all the cash on dog bones and toys. Then Corey went to an animal shelter in Anaheim and he handed out the bones to the dogs, he personally made sure that each and every dog had a bone and a toy. He was such a sweetheart like that and totally generous – to a fault.” Not only was Corey generous with his money but he was generous with his time. Fields went on to tell the sweet story about how Corey invited a fan to dinner with them and insisted on paying the bill. Such kindness is truly extraordinary, inspiring, and deserves to be recognized.

It’s quite difficult to fathom the fact that an individual had the ability to contain as much beauty, talent, courage, and kindness as Corey Ian Haim. He’s the epitome of sublimity, the paragon of generosity. He’s a man who never harmed anyone but himself, a man who graced each individual he came across with every ounce of love that rested in his big heart, a man who put everyone in front of himself, a man who would give you the shirt off his back. Although he may be gone from this earth, he has engraved a footstep in this earth that will never wash away. Thank you Corey Haim for all you have done, we love you.
