Mélanie CAN Do It

Mélanie Ségard is a 21-year-old woman with a great dream, to present the weather on French TV. In order to make her dream come true, The National Union of Charities for Parents with Disabled Children helped her create her page, Mélanie peut le faire, in English Melanie can do it and launched a video message to help her get to 100,000 likes and be given the opportunity to do the weather report by a French news outlet.

In a couple days she got more than 200,000 likes on her page and her introduction video was viewed more than 2 million times,  the description on her page reads:

“Hello, my name is Mélanie, I am 21 years old. I’m different, but I want to show everyone that I can do a lot of things. I want to prove it, by passing on TV. For that, I need you. Then like my page! Thank you all”.

Now she has been offered to present on two channels, France 2 and BFMTV and will be making her dream come true. According to an statement by UNAPEI, Mélanie will be training at the France 2 studios on march 14, and will be broadcasting on march 27.

Mélanie more than fulfilling her dream has been vital for raising the profile of people with Down’s Syndrome said a spokeperson from Unapei according to The Telegraph. “People with disabilities are invisible these days, the 100,000 likes are mostly about support, and it means a lot more than just a thumbs up” said the UNAPEI in a statement. 

Down Syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down síndrome and it occurs Approximately in one in every 700 babies in the United States about 6,000 each year, according to The National Down Syndrome Society.
