Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

The Yellow Power Ranger From The New Movie Might Be Queer And We’re Here For It

Honestly speaking, the new Power Rangers remake looks dope.

From what the trailer conveys, the cinematography is clean, the acting is decent, and the plot is as well-executed than ever. A remake of the 23-year-old franchise in 2017 may seem a bit tired, but there’s something about the new movie that feels fresh and unique. Perhaps it’s the array of familiar faces in the cast, such as Elizabeth Banks from The Hunger Games and recording artist Becky G. Maybe it’s just that the official trailer is so damn attractive. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s because one of the main Power Rangers might be queer.

Yeah, there’s definitely no typo here. According to comic news site Bleeding Cool, the Yellow Power Ranger, played by Becky G, is queer in the 2017 film. Bleeding Cool has been around for years and is known for it’s articles regarding comics and comic franchises, such as Marvel and, yes, the Power Rangers (Saban). The website is also known for it’s wide collection of spoilers for everything from movies to, of course, comic books. The spoilers regarding the 2017 Power Rangers film was published on the site on March 11.

If the spoiler turns out to be true, we’ll be extremely overjoyed. Not only will the yellow ranger, Trini, be a canonically queer main character in a film tailored towards young people, but Trini is also Latinx, thanks to Becky G’s Mexican background. A queer Latinx female character will be amazing representation for the LGBT+ and Latinx communities alike.

Unfortunately, nothing can be confirmed just yet. While Bleeding Cool has a strong background in spilling spoilers, our queer yellow ranger is simply a rumor until the film actually airs on March 24th. However, since the rumor is coming from a site as strong as Bleeding Cool, the odds are in our favor.

The Power Rangers movie is in theaters March 24th, 2017. The film stars Naomi Scott, Dacre Montgomery, Ludi Lin, Becky G, RJ Cyler, and more. The plot surrounds the familiar story of five teenagers whose lives are turned upside down when they learn they are the only ones who can defend their planet against an almighty alien threat. The film is rated PG-13, and was screen-written by the same people who wrote for X-Men: First Class and Thor, Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller, according to RottenTomatoes.com.
