Mental Illness: Depression

Depression

Depression is hard. Depression is not easy to go through. Depression can be something you can never through, but that’s only the case if you chose to do nothing about it. You won’t be one of those people though I promise because you will come to your senses and learn how to cope with anything you are going through. You may struggle your whole life but I promise it will get better and you will get through it.

You will have your days in life when you just feel like giving up and have no motivation to do anything what so ever. It is completely normal. I get those days often but I learned how to cope with it so I’m able to control it before it gets worse.

Depression can come from absolutely anything. You could be bullied, abused, harassed, sexually assaulted, if somebody close to you died etc. Depending on what it is there is always different and endless ways to cope with it.

This is a serious thing. When you get into depression your mind goes everywhere and you feel empty and worthless. You start to overthink and shut everybody out and you don’t even realize it. It isn’t your fault. It really isn’t. People may tell you different and that is okay but it’s up to you whether you want to believe them or not. When I say it isn’t your fault I mean it isn’t your fault that you are in a depression, shutting people out and overthinking. Sometimes you do things that you don’t realize you are doing. That’s because your brain really trynna test you.

Overthinking

Overthinking is completely normal. Trust me I do it day and night, even when I’m sleeping. Your mind is just not used to the situations you are being put it and trying to make you think of all the possibilities you could have fucked up or done something better. You just try to figure out the situation more than you need to and that’s okay but you have to control it.

When I overthink I do something that most people make fun of but honestly I don’t care because it really helps me. I write out everything I am thinking and I just make a chart of everything that could happen from it or everything that did happen and how to fix the situation. I don’t understand why people care so much about it being weird. If it helps you do it. You can’t just help yourself because you are scared of how people will react. You have to want to help yourself.

Overthinking can lead to many things. For example, some people do drugs to help with stopping them from overthinking and forget everything. Okay, my opinion on that is to not go that direction. Take every route but that one. Doing that isn’t helping or changing anything or anybody. All you are doing is actually going dumb off of some shit you bought. You are only forgetting that day, you are only forgetting your problems in that time period. When you snap back to a normal person you are just looking dumb because that did nothing but make you and all your problems worse. You getting high is not doing anything. All of your problems are still there and you are only creating more. I am not here to tell you what to do but I just really hope you don’t go down that path and you realize what you need to do to get yourself and your problems better.

There is so much to talk about on overthinking and I know you get my point. I won’t go on any longer than I have about it. Just remember to learn to control your thoughts so you don’t overthink and make the situation worse. I will talk more about on how to cope with different things later.

Why do you get Depression?

Depression can be caused by many different things. There isn’t always one reason that caused everybody’s depression. We all go through different things and we all have endless amounts of reasons that may cause our depression. If you think you get randomly depressed for no reason that could be possible if you have bipolar depression but most of the time it isn’t that. If you get depressed and think it had nothing to do with anything you have to think back on everything you were thinking because it is almost always triggered by something. We have involuntary thoughts and we don’t realize we are thinking about some things. It is hard to figure that out and it is hard to realize what exactly you were thinking. That is completely normal.

When you have depression there may be problems with the different levels in your brain. Meaning the chemicals in your brain are out of balance. Some people don’t think depression can be caused by genetics, but it can. You are more likely to have depression if somebody in your family had it before. It doesn’t make sense to some people and that is totally understandable. Just because there is nothing going wrong in your life doesn’t mean you can’t have depression. Like I said it could be caused by genetics and or by past events. This part is kind of irrelevant but not really if you apply to this. I don’t know so that’s why I am making sure I include every possibility.

There are many different reasons linked to everybody’s depression. I don’t know your personal reasons so I will write about all the different common and uncommon reasons to depression. It’s good to not skim past this part because you could figure out maybe one of the reasons are why you are depressed and you don’t know it.

I guess it would make more sense to start off by talking about the common reasons to why you could have depression.

Like I have already said one common reason could be from genetics. The reason behind this is because this could be inherited because it could be a trait somebody in your family history had. There had been scientific studies about this but they haven’t gone too deep in that study. I suppose it would help if you knew who in your immediate family had depression. Since this is a factor you could be more likely to get depression easier than others.
The next reason is from your brain being chemically unbalanced. These chemicals in different parts of your brain are called neurotransmitters. These control your mood and help the brain communicate with different parts.
One that girls should all know is because of our hormones. This is because when our little friend comes downtown it messes with our hormones and it makes it all worse since we are already emotionally unbalanced.
This to me is very important because of how common this is. Season Defective Disorder is depression caused by the seasons when they change. This is because when the seasons change it disturbs the normal circadian rhythm in your body.
The last one is mental illnesses you may have. Such as anxiety it can come with depression and it will make you more likely to have major depression.

The uncommon reasons are summer disease, thyroid disease, poor sleeping habits, where you live, poor relationships with family, and medication you are taking.

You could have any of these. Just know these are only a few.

Of course, more people have the more common reasons but I know a few people who have the uncommon reasons and it’s completely normal. It really isn’t anything to freak out about.

How to Cope with Depression

Depression can be hard to cope with at times. It’s not easy because you feel like you are alone and nobody can understand how you are feeling. There are many different things you can do to cope but many people refuse to do so because they are afraid of what people will think about it. In my opinion, the first time I was told what coping skills were and how to apply them to my life I knew I wasn’t going to listen. I was just going to keep doing what I was doing and hope to get better. That is not how life works. I had to learn the hard way.

There are many ways to cope with depression. There are many things you can do about it. The most important thing to do though is telling somebody close to you. Somebody you trust so they can be there for you during your hard times and be with you every step of the way.

Only you can know what is the best way to cope with what you are going through. You have to figure out what would be the most effective and help the most. There are many things such as writing and drawing. Look up way on how to cope with things and pick out the best one. Pick out the one that catches your eye and you know will relieve you.

Once you do that you are one step closer to getting better.

Things to Do and Understand About Depression

It would be best to talk to a parent or an immediate family relative on how you feel. Talk to them and let them know what you are going through and how you feel. I promise you they will help. Family was put in our life for a reason to be there for us when nobody else is and to comfort and love us in our worst times. A family will never leave us.

If you don’t have a family member to talk to or you feel uncomfortable talking to your family members, then that’s okay. There are many other people to talk to. Talk to your friends. Talk to the friend that is closest to you and you feel like can understand and help you. If you don’t feel like you have that person there are other people. For some people, it was their guidance counselor at school or out of school. For me, it was a teacher that I felt I was close with and knew for a while. See it doesn’t have to be family or a friend you have to talk to there are other people out there. They will be there for you.

Don’t sit around and do nothing. Don’t sit in your room late at night and cry because you feel nobody is there. Don’t go the wrong route and try to end your life. Don’t drop everybody out of your life. Not everybody is the enemy. You can’t get rid of everybody people you are scared they are all negative or talking about you. You can’t sit around and continue to get worse and complain. You wonder why you aren’t getting better it’s because you allowing yourself to get worse. Get up and get help. Get involved school, clubs, and even sports. Something to keep your mind off of everything. There’s so much you do that just makes the situation worse. You have to realize it and figure it out so you can fix it.

Understand that you are not alone. You aren’t the only one going through tough times. You aren’t the only one that feels misunderstood, worthless, and like a burden in everybody’s life. We feel that way but deep down we know it isn’t true. You are here for a reason. You have a purpose in life and that’s to make the world a better place. But you are not going to get better by just laying around and doing nothing with your life. Doing just that is making everything worse. Get help, find somebody to talk to. You are loved and you were not placed on this earth to just be selfish and end everything when an obstacle is thrown your way. Get through that obstacle and toughen up show people how strong you are you. Prove them wrong and show them that you are better than them. We all know they aren’t getting far in life if all they are doing is bringing everybody down.
