Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

The Major Problem With Snapchat’s Discover Page

For a while now, Snapchat has been one of the biggest growing forms of social media. The app, originally released in September 2011 allows users to share stories for a limited amount of time before they disappear forever.

I spend a fair share of my time on Snapchat but after scrolling through numerous stories uploaded by my friends, I look through the Discover feature of the app which was introduced in 2015.

Now, this feature includes important news stories of the day from various newspapers and magazines, including, Daily Mail, Sun, Cosmo and Buzzfeed.

As someone who views them at least six times a week, I’ve started to notice a trend.

One that needs to stop and is in actual fact is sadly universal.

There has not been one day in at least a year that the stories have not had some kind of breaking news featuring the Kardashians or the Jenners.

And on top of that, they are always without fail shown in the first few slides of the stories.

It can be something a trivial as them going out to buy lunch or meeting up with friends but Daily Mail will feel the need to update us on their lives.

Now I’m not trying to ‘bash’ the Kardashians in any way shape or form.

My main problem with this issue is that there is so much more pressing news that needs to be shown that is unfortunately left till the last section of the stories, and by this point, most people would have clicked off.

Even when news focusing on more important matters in the world is shown for example the war in Syria or the Presidential Election, it is only given one slide worth when the Kardashians are given two even three.

I find it heartbreaking that there are literally people dying around the world, some people are doing things to help humanity, other things are happening that we need to be updated on but we are instead are being informed that Kylie Jenner is yet again on holiday.

And lets not even get started on the absence of a continuous LGBT+ inspirational news ad. Even when tv shows with important messages such as 13 Reasons Why come out, you still have to scroll through most of the stories to get one, half arsed story.

PSA to Snapchat, and all the news sites featured on the app: please show us new we care about, news that we need to know, news that is vital.
