Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

How We Can Still Save Net Neutrality

The Federal Communications Commission has officially voted to kill Net Neutrality. While it’s important to know what it is, what it means to us and how losing it will affect everyone who uses the internet, it’s also vital to know what we as frustrated internet-users can do now in response.

The FCC vote is not the final say in regards to Net Neutrality. There are a few ways this vote can be repealed. This vote is the beginning of a long legal battle which will head to the courts and to Congress, where the Congressional Review Act (CRA) could nullify an action such as this vote with a vote from the majority of the House and the Senate.

Knowing that this battle is not completely lost, it’s vital that we citizens do our part.

Sign the Petition

Congress has 60 days to decide to use the CRA. We must do our part and raise our voice by pressuring Congress to act. ACLU has set up a petition that has already been signed by thousands to help do this, but we need as many signatures as possible. It’s quick and easy to support the petition and declare your stance on Net Neutrality.

Call Your Representatives

While emails, petitions and letters are all important, a phone call with a district office staffer is the best way to ensure your feedback and concerns are being heard. It’s very easy to find a phone number for your House Representative and State Senators, and there are even many basic scripts available online to make it easier if you aren’t quite sure what to say.

Utilize BattleForTheNet.com

This has been a go-to website for many leading up to FCC vote, and it is still a go-to now. Battleforthenet.com tells you how to easily write, call or even text Congress, and even has a full letter pre-written for you to use or base your letter off of. The website also shows you where your state rep’s stand on Net Neutrality, and has many other resources available to further explain what Net Neutrality is.

These three acts are quick and simple, and also completely necessary. While it is crucial to educate yourself on the overall use of Net Neutrality, your concerns mean nothing if you don’t do your part to help fight against it’s loss.
