From news of their engagement to their wedding, the relationship between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is truly something out of a fairy-tale. While he’s a prince born into royal life, she’s a self-made American actress, making history by wedding into the British Royal Family.
I, personally, am not one to normally fall into the hype of tabloid-style stories like this one; but this one is different. This is no normal royal wedding. Meghan Markle is the first biracial, divorced American to wed into the British Royal Family and that’s a big deal.
Markle is a normal person: she has faced hardship, especially in her former occupation as an actress.
Markle has been vocal about the role of her race and its relation to the obstacles she faced in the industry, saying: “I wasn’t black enough for the black roles and I wasn’t white enough for the white ones, leaving me somewhere in the middle as the ethnic chameleon who couldn’t book a job.”
Markle is also an outspoken activist, once calling Donald Trump “misogynistic” and openly supporting the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements. However, the Royal Family is to stay impartial on political topics, but Markle will likely still be continue to be vocal on issues such as clean drinking water and women’s education. Like the late Princess Diana, Markle is expected to take on humanitarian causes using her platform.
Especially in the week before her wedding, Markle has faced drama and ubiquitous media attention, dealing with her father staging photos for the paparazzi and then undergoing heart surgery. These events left Markle without someone to walk her down the aisle, a task that will now reportedly be done by Prince Charles. Nevertheless, Markle stayed calm under the immense pressure that was being put on her, a true standard for the Royal Family.
However, Markle will be anything but the typical royal. She’s modern, outspoken, different and will no doubt be a driving force into a new era of royalty. Meghan Markle is making history and the world can’t wait to see it.
