Being a Trans Man and Dating a Football Player: Lessons Learned

While we adjusted quickly, the world around us did not. The first day we held hands, I remember someone approaching us... he barely knew A himself, but he felt comfortable enough to say this: "Why do you even like her?" He brushed it off, but it stayed in my mind. Later, he was asked more and more inappropriate, intimate questions about my body

These Are The “Hidden Figures” In LGBT Activism

With India’s supreme court ruling to finally make gay intercourse legal in September, and the landslide of legalizations concerning homosexuality in 2016 and 2017, it seems as though after years the tide is finally turning in favor of those who are LGBT. (Even though transgender people still have some laws to fight before gaining access to the full scope of human rights.) As we look to the future for progress, we need to give credit

What Did We Learn From Genderquake?

With the recent showing of the reality television show, Genderquake and the debate that followed, the identity of gender has been headlining across the world. The reality show on Channel 4 saw eleven individuals of different gender identities live together in a house for a week. Although the concept is meant to educate people across the globe about the gender spectrum rather than the concept of two genders, I discovered that even in the LGBTQ+

Newly-Weds Fight Back With Kindness After Transphobic Headline Slur

Newly-weds Hannah Rose, née Winterbourne, and Jake Graf were met by the transphobic headline ‘Tran and Wife’ from The Sun newspaper following their recent marriage. The controversial front-page headline on March 27 was followed with a stunning article written by Emma Pietras regarding the recent marriage of transgender couple, Hannah, 31, and Jake, 40. The sub-heading on the U.K’s national newspaper also caused outrage, featuring the words ‘Jake who used to be a woman weds

The Future of Transgender Military Members is Uncertain

President Donald Trump is continuing his attempt to prevent transgender military members from serving. After federal courts thwarted his attempt at a ‘ban’ in July 2016, he’s rescinded his last policy to enact a new one. It will limit future recruits based on criteria that are developed through “extensive study by senior uniformed and civilian leaders, including combat veterans.” The criteria were released in a memo from the Pentagon on Friday, March 22. It detailed specifics that disqualify transgender

The Transgender Military Ban Has Been Delayed

In June 2016, Obama allowed transgender people already in the military to serve openly, and openly transgender people to apply. A one-year deadline was set for the military to begin accepting trans troops; this was then extended to begin on Jan. 1, 2018. On July 26th, 2017, Trump tweeted in two parts, “….Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot

A Federal Judge Blocks Trump’s Ban On Transgender Troops In the Military

The LGBTQ community is celebrating a win. This Monday, October 30th, a federal judge blocked Trump’s transgender military ban. For those who were unaware of this ban, President Trump released a statement on July 26th of this year, announcing that  “the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military”.  The announcement was followed a formal Presidential Memorandum on August 25th, entirely bending the policy

Let’s Take A Look At What It’s Like To Be Trans All Over The World

In recent times, trans rights have advanced tremendously, especially in developed countries. Nations like Sweden, Israel and New Zealand have seen great leaps forwards when it comes to trans rights, including the election of a trans member of parliament and the recruitment of trans soldiers in some militaries around the world. Right here at home, states like California have enacted relatively progressive policies medically, including integrating transition costs into the state’s Medicaid program. But the fact

We Need to Take Our Trans Youth Seriously Before They’re Gone

Last Thursday, the news broke to the public that a 15-year-old transgender boy had committed suicide in England after his school had refused to change his name to Leo in its records. The student, Leo Etherington, passed away in May of this year, but news outlets are only now hearing of the story. Leo Etherington’s story is not unique for a transgender teen; after coming out to his family and school as male, his teachers

Trans People Aren’t Sexual Predators, We Just Want to Go to the Bathroom

Trigger warning: r*pe, sexual violence, sexual assault Transgender bathroom laws has been a hot topic of debate in recent years, as one by one, places all around the world attempt to deny trans people the right to legally use the restroom in public. We are constantly framed as rapists and sexual predators who are out to prey on innocent women and children in the bathroom, despite there being no evidence to suggest that this ever happens.
